Have a bite of the Fonda sea bass from Piran

This experience takes place in the southern part of the Slovenian coast, at the Slovenia’s only fish farm in the protected environment of the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park. While enjoying this experience, you will take a bite of the raw Fonda sea bass, with a pinch of Pirans fleur de sel and a few drops of Istrian olive oil, along with a glass of Malvasia wine, which will convince you that the family succeeded in their endeavor. This fish boutique in the middle of the sea stands out especially for its sustainable sea bass farming.

Learn why from an economic perspective, everything is done ‘incorrectly’ at the Fonda Fish Farm: fish are kept in the water for too long, they are fed overly expensive food, only the best fingerlings are farmed, everything is done by hand, chemicals are not used and there are ten times fewer fish in the nets than what is usual. However, this is the price that they pay in their strong desire to farm the best reared fish in the world.

What will you experience:

• you will meet your guide at the fish farm base in Seča.
• A welcoming and a brief presentation of the fishing farm activities carried out on land.
• Embankment a vessel. If desired, visitors can row to the fish farm in a kayak or a paddle board. Boat ride or rowing to the Fonda fish garden.
• Presentation of the characteristics of the Sečovlje Salt Pans Landscape Park and the Portorož Fishing Reserve.
• A tour of the Fonda sea garden and a fish feeding demonstration.
• A boat ride to land and returning to the fish farm base. During their return, visitors can also admire a mussel habitat.
• The experience concludes under a pine tree with a boutique gastronomic experience (raw and smoked sea bass with fleur de sel, local Istrian olive oil and wine produced by local winemakers).

The meeting point is at our small fish farming port at the end of the Saint Jernej canal (the very last building on the left), at the edge of Sečovlje Salina Nature Park. The entrance to our yard where you can park your car is at the sign FONDA on the right side, near a big old olive tree. Please adhere to the schedule and arrive neither too early nor too late, as there might be another group ahead of or behind you, or you may be joining others for a group visit. Your punctuality will significantly contribute to a seamless and pleasant experience for all. Regrettably, we won’t be able to wait for latecomers.

Additional information

During the summer and in warm weather we advise visitors to bring sun protection (sunglasses, hats and sunscreen). In winter and cold weather we recommend that visitors dress warmly and have with them layers of warm clothing and a windproof jacket.
